In this workshop, students will practice moving dynamically with a sense of ease and effortless-ness on the vertical rope. We’ll practice a progression of beats and exercises to generate momentum, and then explore using this momentum to maximum effect, either in flashy power moves or to wrap the rope hands-free. Time allowing, other topics may include: fake release moves, building large drops, using body shape to roll up, and some sequences of movement to take home.

Prerequisites: 1 year of rope or tissue training, ability to do 8 pull-ups, ability to do 8 bent-arm, or 4 straight-arm straddle-ups.

Terry Crane is an alumnus of the Beijing International Arts School, the National Circus School of Montreal, and Oberlin College. Terry has impressed audiences, critics, and circus aficionados alike with his fearless, original aerial rope technique. He has performed in 10 countries on 3 continents, with multiple television appearances, and in front prestigious of persons such as the king of Norway and the prime minister of Thailand. To date he has founded 2 companies, Circus Syzygy, and the Acrobatic Conundrum. His work is inspired by a diverse range of influences including capoeira, modern dance, and theatrical clown, which infuse his own fiercely unique style.

Carey Cramer comes from a diverse background in classic ballet, tap, jazz, modern dance, muay thai kickboxing and acrobatics. After her first taste of circus just over 6 years ago, she trained intensively under the coaching of Terry Crane for two years before attending the prestigious National Circus School of Montreal. There her professional formation included acrobatics, hand balancing, clowning, singing, and her primary discipline of rope. Influence from hip hop, break dance, and contact improvisation styles along with a passionate love of movement and psychology have transferred to Carey’s work on the rope empowering her with a unique, raw, and dynamic style. She has brought her wide variety of skills to the stage performing in Montreal, Seattle, Vancouver, and even touring with the band “Heart” last year. She has just recently moved on from the National School and The Acrobatic Conundrum is the first circus company she has the pleasure to work with.
